FAQs

What is AMATS?

AMATS is a coalition of professional intervention and transport companies who mediate critical moments with families that need assistance having their loved one placed in treatment.

How does a Professional Transport differ from other transports?

AMATS Members ascribe to a Professional Transport as it is a modality of care for mediating and managing at-risk individuals as well as persons in-crisis. This modality has raised the standard of care for the families we serve and is supported by a unique skill-set that includes training in crisis management intervention and safety that together bring balance and trust to a difficult situation. Professional Transports incorporate transparency, truth, and compassion; operate within the boundaries of the law; make certain at least one parent or guardian is present during the commencement of the intervention and transport; and provide ongoing intervals of communication to the parents or guardians throughout the transport.

How has AMATS raised the Standard of Care for persons needing assistance through intervention and transport?

AMATS has raised the standard of care by outlining a specific Standard of Practice that defines safe principles and criteria for our Members. This Standard of Practice includes governance that embraces Members carrying a commercial liability policy; being a registered business entity with their home State and holding a business license with their local municipality; and making certain their transport agents pass a criminal background check and have a safe driving record. Members are responsible to provide continuing educational opportunities for their transporters and interventionists.

What type Transports does AMATS support?

AMATS supports safe transports tailored for each person in our care. AMATS encourages parents and guardians to make sure the professional transport company they choose helps them know what to expect on the day of the intervention.

What about the use of restraints?

AMATS does not encourage the use of restraints as a regular component of the professional transport modality. However, AMATS does recognize that as a last resort in some critical situations the use of restraints can prevent further harm and mitigate a crisis. AMATS Members whose transport agents carry restraints hold current certifications in the proper application and use of approved devices.

Where does AMATS transport?

AMATS Members provide intra-continental and international interventions and transports. Clients are encouraged to reach out to AMATS Members independently, perform their own due diligence and then decide which Member best meets their needs.

Does AMATS make referrals for placement or maintain a listing of treatment facilities?

AMATS as a body does not make referrals to facilities, treatment centers or other therapeutic environments. AMATS does suggest that parents and guardians needing assistance with placement, when possible, reach out to a referring professional or educational consultant who specializes in placement for the type of issues your adolescent or adult is facing. Although AMATS Members may provide additional services to the Mental Health Community, AMATS assumes no responsibility for advice given to Clients by AMATS Members, and further does not take responsibility for the selection of the destination school, program or treatment facility and their respective standards of practice.

Do I have to be in crisis to contact AMATS?

No, AMATS encourages parents, guardians and adult family members observing their loved one engaging in risky behaviors to reach out for professional guidance before the situation escalates to crisis level. Remember if your crisis is an emergency, call 911 before you reach out elsewhere.
